Pleasant Plethora of Pineapples

Pineapples galore!
Well the full-blown pineapple season in Tonga is finally upon us.  We have talked about how delicious, sweet, and non-acidic they are and now they are also very cheap and plentiful.  You can find them everywhere! Frequently we are given pineapples as they seem to be like zucchini when in season.  We do find a way to eat them all.

The new CostLow in Tonga.  By far
the largest supermarket in the country.

Here are a few photos of the new CostLow just so you know we're not making this up.  It may take a little while to get things fully stocked and it will be interesting to see how well it is accepted by the locals.  If the first week is any indication it is going to be a huge success.

Surveying the options.

One of the big differences is that they will unwrap and sell individual items.  In fact, there is no price advantage to buying in bulk as 24 items cost the same as 1 item x 24.  At least we have a bigger selection now.

Peg (black hen) her bestie and 2 chicks.

Peg the one footed chicken seems to have found a friend and after loosing all of her last batch of chicks (to the local feral cats we think) she has found a new roost and bestie to hang with.  They both watch out for these last two remaining chick and we're hoping they can survive.  We have tried to run the cats off (as much as possible) but we do see one every now and then.  Of course, this means that the roosters have also started to creep back into our area so we hope these roosters can tell time.  The last rooster would crow at all hours of the night and had to be ....  let's just say relocated (think  KFC).

Peg and her bestie roosting in the top of the hedge.  We're not sure how the
chicks get up there but at least they seem to be surviving (for now).

Holiday World market (which pretty much included booths from Vava'u and Ha'api).

Notice the stick holding up the low wire so they don't hit the top
of the car.  It's has been like this since we arrived.

Tree trimmers cutting down a tree that hung over a gas station.
Notice all of the young kids hanging out on top of the gas station?
One of the not so feral cats hanging  out inside one of the local diners.
Sister Kapp hanging out with some of her missionary buddies priory's to the
new intake.

Elder Kapp, Elder Lavaka and Sister Kapp at the MQ.
Notice that we're in our height enhancing flip-flops and he is bare foot.

Rugby Mania!  I know that many of you thought you were through with this after last week but the celebration was so large that we had to include a few more photos.  The Tongan rugby team returned home this week to a well deserved hero's welcome.  They came in a few different groups which tended to stretch out the celebration over several days.  They also had an impromptu holiday and parade on Wednesday that was fun.  It's been such a wonderful experience to see and feel first hand the national and cultural pride as everyone in the community came out to support each other and the rugby team.

Waiting for the caravan to begin.

Having fun riding on the mower (does this qualify as a riding mower now)?

ATV (the impromptu parade filled both lanes East and Westbound).

The Tongan flag in tissue paper.

The driver doesn't need to see.

Decorating with anything red.

When the music played people danced in the streets sometimes stopping
the entire precession.

Taking a picture of us taking a picture of them.

Hanging out of the car windows seemed to be okay.

Some tried to get a little bit fancy.

Dressed in their best.

On top ... no problem!

One house (including the roof) was painted just for the team.
